The Coastal Municipalities Water Utility opened two desalination station in Rafah and Bani Sohela in the south of Gaza. The opening was attended by a number of heads of municipalities, Deputy Director General Eng. Maher Al Najar, Customer Services Manager Eng. Zaidan Dahman, Eng. Eman Eqel representative of UNICEF as well as many heads of municipalities and representatives of governmental and civil institutions. At the beginning of the opening festival, the head of the municipality Abdel Qader Al Raqeb presented the reality of water services in the area of Bani Suhila and the support provided by the CMWU to this sector, also he asked the heads of the CMWU to work on improving sanitation services in the area in order to solve the environmental problems the citizens suffer from. Eng. Maher Al Najar shed light on the obstacles faced by the CMWU in implementing strategic projects due to the siege imposed by Israel and the prevention of entrance of any needed materials required for the execution of such projects. Eng. Al Najar also added that the CMWU and in cooperation with international institutions is working on finding alternative ways to ensure and facilitate the entrance of materials required to improve the services provided. After the completion of the opening of the desalination station in Bani Suhila the crowd went to Rafah to open the desalination station there, Eng.Issa Al Nashar the head of Rafah municipality, Dr. Ali Barhoum Deputy Manager and the staff of the CMWU welcomed them. Head of Rafah Municipality stated that the opening of the desalination station in Rafah is just one of a series of projects that the CMWU in cooperation with donor institutions work on, the matter that assures the continuous support of the municipality for the CMWU. Also he-Eng. Al Nashar- expressed his gratefulness to all of those who contributed in the accomplishment of this project and that every one should make good use of it. Its worth mentioning that the cost of each desalination station is about 450,000 U.S dollars which was totally funded by the UNICEF. The capacity of each station is estimated to be 50 cubic meters per hour with a production capacity of about 1200 cubic meters daily and serving 15,000 citizens. The stations were implemented through Elewa Company in coordination with ODIS Company.

The entrance of electrical generators and a forklift for the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility Gaza/Public Relation The Coastal Municipalities Water Utility was able to enter a number of generators across Karam Abu Salem border in Rafah –South of Gaza- in addition to the entry of spare parts and a left for the benefit of many projects. The Director General of the Coastal municipalities Water Utility Eng.Monther Shoblak said that four generators with an electrical power ranging between KVA110 and KVA220 were entered to be used in water facilities and sanitation services as required. Also He concluded that a forklift to be used in the stores of the Utility was entered. The forklift was purchased via local importer under a contract funded by the World Bank since 2007. Eng. Shoblak expressed his gratefulness in general to all of those who contributed in facilitating the entrance of such equipments required for the main projects implemented by the Utility in order to improve the water reality, and special thanks goes to the Palestinian Water Authority, the office of the coordinator of human affairs(OCHA), the World Bank, and the Quartet. The Director General Eng.Shoblak asked the local and international communities to put more pressure on the Israeli side to end the blockade imposed on the Strip since four years, also he asked for facilitating the entrance of the materials required for maintenance and operations to ensure the continuity of water and sanitations services, as well as completing the projects which have been stopped due to lack of construction equipments.

Organized by the "Coastal Municipalities Water Utility", Muslim Hands", and "Municipality of Der Al Balah" Opening a well in Der Al Balah City The CMWU in cooperation with Muslim Hands Institution and Der Al Balah Municipality celebrated the opening of Der Al Balah Well at al Mutared Area in the middle of Gaza Strip. The ceremony was attended by Eng.Monther Shoblak-Director General of the CMWU, Mr.Ghazi Al Masry-the mayor of Der Al Balah Municipality, Dr.Saed Salah- Head of Muslim Hands Institution, a number of middle area Municipalities mayors, and several representatives of funding agencies. The goal of drilling the well was to provide more facilities to citizens. The well provides the residents of the eastern area of Der Al Balah and Al Mazraa' Area With water. The production capacity of the well is estimated to be 50 cubic meters per hour.

At the end of the campaign " Zero your bill and Draw your car", the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility granted Sabah Abu Al Bateekh a certified check with an amount equal to about 17 thousands dollars. Eng. Monther Shoblak the Director General of the Costal Municipalities Water Utility granted the grand prize to the winner (Sabah Abu Al Bateekh) of the campaign "Zero your bill and Draw your car", Sabah Abu Al Bateekh from Rafah-southern of Gaza- won a 2010 Hyundai car at the end of the campaign. This campaign started at the beginning of April 2009 and it was scheduled to be ended at 1/4/2010. Dr.Majed Abu Ramadan –chairman of the board of directors of the CMWU-attended the ending ceremony, along with Eng.Issa Al Nashar-head of Rafah municipality, and Eng. Monther Shoblak, in addition to several municipalities mayors, governmental institutions & NGOs representatives, and thousands of committed customers. Its known that the main aim of the campaign was to encourage Rafah citizens to be committed to pay their water bills, which may facilitate the provision of significant services by the Utility, the campaign concluded the spread of hundreds of tangible awards passing through three stages, and ended by the great festival through which 60 prizes were electronically drawn. At the end the grand prize was drawn and was granted to Abu al Bateekh. Its worth mentioning that the winning family convinced paying water bills believing that this would mean saving public funds, as well as its commitment to rationalize water consumption.
